Q:How long the procedure does usually takes?
A:It takes approximately 25 minutes.
Q:What type of anesthesia is used for the vasectomy ?
A:Local anesthesia (1%Lidocaine)
Q:If I am very nervous about the procedure, is there any other medication that are used? A:If the patient requests a medication pre-procedure, we can prescribe valium or Xanax prior to the procedure. Most people do need any medication other than local medications.
Q:Can I drive home after the vasectomy?
A:If the patient takes no narcotic, pain medication or sedatives prior to the procedures, they can drive home. If minor procedures have not been a problem in the past you're going to be able to drive home
Q:Can my wife or significant other be present in the room during the procedure?
A:It is up the patient to decide. This is allowed if the patient prefers.
Q:What advice would you give prior to the vasectomy?
A:Do not take excess aspirin or Motrin prior to the vasectomy. Do not eat a heavy meal within 2-3 hours prior. Wear tight underwear or athletic support. Shave mid-penis to mid scrotum.
Q:When can I shower and swim after procedure?
A:Patient can shower in 6-8 hours. Patient can swim in 36-48 hours.
Q:When can the papatient resume physical and sexual activity?
A:Usually in 3-4 days if there is no significant discomfort. Always start with less strenuous activity and increase activity according to your own comfort level.
Q:When I will be sterile after the vasectomy?
A:Usualy in 20-25 ejaculations over a couple of months. Always check post vasectomy semen analysis before having unprotected intercourse.
Q:How effective is the procedure?
A:The procedure can fail if the vas deferens reconnects. This occurs in approximately 1 in 300 cases .This Usually occurs in the first year, if this is concern, repeat semen analysis in 6 month.

A:There is usually minor swelling or discomfort that last a few days. I have never had a testicular loss or need for hospitalization after a vasectomy . There is no long term risk after vasectomy, infection after a vasectomy is rare.
Q:Does anyone assist or prep the surgical site?
A:Dr Acosta Is the only one in the room whith the patient. Dr Acosta preps the surgical site and performs the vasectomy with no need of an assistant.
Q:Do I need a pre-op visit before the vasectomy?
A;You do not need a visit before a vasectomy if you do not wish and the insurance company does not required a pre-op visit. The patient is more than welcome to see Dr Acosta in office on a separate pre-op visit if it makes the patient more comfortable to aske question in person.
